SOA Category OG12
Certification for environmental remediation works and territorial protection
The OG12 category within the SOA certification system covers environmental remediation and environmental protection works. It is a general works category dedicated to the remediation of contaminated sites, construction of anti‑pollution systems, and interventions aimed at safeguarding ecosystems and public health. OG12 is becoming increasingly relevant in both public procurement and private industrial redevelopment projects.

Environmental remediation and site safety: scope of OG12
OG12 applies to a wide range of environmental interventions aimed at remediation and securing contaminated areas:
- Remediation of decommissioned industrial sites: removal of contaminated soil and groundwater, treatment of aquifers, stabilization of hazardous waste. Typical examples include petrochemical sites or abandoned landfills.
- Landfills and waste disposal sites: construction and controlled closure of landfills, including geomembrane liners, leachate drainage systems, biogas capture networks and final covers.
- Environmental barriers and drainage systems: hydraulic barriers, impermeable diaphragms, groundwater cutoff systems and drainage networks to contain the spread of contaminants.
- Treatment and purification plants: installation of mobile or fixed plants for treating groundwater or toxic vapors, including bioremediation processes.
- Environmental monitoring and safety: installation of piezometers, sensors, control units and containment systems to monitor and secure the site during and after remediation.
Related SOA Categories
- OG8 – Hydraulic works and flood protection: OG12 concerns remediation and treatment of contaminated soil/groundwater, while OG8 focuses on rivers, canals and hydraulic defense works. Remediating an industrial site = OG12; hydraulic drainage works = OG8.
- OG13 – Environmental engineering: Often follows OG12. After contaminants are removed (OG12), ecological restoration (OG13) takes place: reforestation, planting, slope stabilization, landfill greening.
- OS14 – Waste treatment plants: waste-to-energy, composting, leachate treatment. In integrated environmental projects OS14 complements OG12 for the plant component.
- OS22 – Water treatment and purification plants: required when remediation includes construction of relevant treatment systems for contaminated water.
- OS21 – Special structural works: diaphragm walls, slurry walls, soil consolidation—used to isolate contaminated areas or protect aquifers.
- OS23 – Demolition: needed when remediation includes demolition of contaminated structures or tanks.
- OS15 – Marine, lake and river cleaning: removal of polluted sediments or waste from bodies of water using specialized equipment.
